Globe Thistleby =VinayRao

Photography / Macro / Nature

This is the Globe Thistle (Echinops) flower in its spiky state, before each of those spikes bloom with purple flowers.

Used focus stacking from two shots to get both the centre and the outside spiky halo of the flower in focus.

The angle from which the shot was taken is great. It adds spatiality and perspective to the photo. If you look at the middle of the flower you have the impression it gets out of the picture, as if being 3D.

The color range is good as well and the DoF couldn't have been better. I also like the fact that you had a simple subject and that your photo is not overcrowded with colors or details.

The light is a little bit stronger than expected but, since the photo isn't burnt, I can say it's ok.

The matching colors are a plus that draws the eyes into it to find the details in this shot, well balanced from near to out of focus and the details in the stem and spikes are just amazing. the contrast fits this one well with the light around the edges you tend to get lost in the spikes itself and the black trails just cross you up inside more trails that takes you further into the ends of the spikes. The stem just adds a batty style and finish to this very well covered in its own protection layers. The colors goes hand in hand

Lovely, the light really radiates on the ends of those spikes. They look amazing when they have that blue/purple tint to them, even before they flower.
